Antique Spotlight: Collecting Vintage & Retro Patterns

Original Article: Dusty Old Thing

There’s a romance in looking back at the kinds of clothes we wore “back in the day” and a fascination with certain styles from long ago. With so many period TV shows and movies we see some of the wonderful clothes worn “upstairs” or “down”, Edwardian, flapper, frugal during War, extravagant later, bold, modest, strange and classic.

This is Nancy with Dusty Old Thing and I have two favorite periods: The “New Look” following WWII and the ‘60s classic lines. Like many of us, I took Home Economics in school. Sewing and Cooking and Basic Homemaking were required in Junior High for girls. The boys got a shorter course. In high school I took more Sewing along with all the college prep classes. Those were the days when designer patterns were replicated by Vogue and when quality fabric filled department stores.

5 Tips for Buying Antique Furniture

Antique furniture is a big investment and, well, a big thing to cart home. Before you put time and money into one of these purchases, check out our tips for buying antique furniture – then enjoy the hunt for something unique!

1). Research, research, research

There’s so much to learn about antique furniture! Before you start browsing and seriously making purchases, read as much as you can about antique furniture – especially if there is a certain time period or style that you really like. The more educated you are about the furniture, the easier it will be to spot reproductions and overpriced items.

2). Look for the mark from the manufacturer or maker

Most antique furniture has some kind of mark from the person or place that was responsible for building it – often in places that people wouldn’t see, like the inside of a dresser drawer or the backside of a piece.

3). Look for signs of age

Since the trend now is to make furniture look antique, you might come across a piece that someone has modified to look older than it is. But, there are some telltale signs – first, look for imperfections. If something was handmade, then there will be variations in the woodwork – if everything looks exactly uniform, then there’s reason to be suspicious.

Family inherit old building and unearth amazing vintage shoe store that was locked up for decades

…and all the footwear is in perfect condition (albeit a little dusty).

An American family have unearthed an Aladdin’s cave of mint-condition vintage shoes in an old building they inherited from their grandparents.
The building operated as a shoe store from the 1940s until the 1960s, but the doors had been locked for decades. Until now.

One of the family members posted the rare find to online noticeboard Reddit recently, but stopped short of revealing the location, so as to prevent any break-ins.

Original Story

The historic collection is likely worth a small fortune.

All the shoes appear to be completely untouched and are at least 50 years old.
Despite some dust they are practically good as new.

The store closed when the grandmother fell ill and the family, too busy to manage it themselves, decided to close it, the blog Messy Nessy Chic reported.

‘I have no idea how profitable (the business) was, perhaps that was a factor (in it closing),’ the user, Oktober75, posted on Reddit.

‘My grandparents were known for hoarding. My guess is they went with the mentality ”it will be worth something some day”.

‘That day came and went.’
However the user reiterated that the location will remain a secret, for security reasons, until the family is ready.

‘When we’re ready to draw attention, I’d be happy to share more details,’ the user wrote.

Revealed: Eerie new images show forgotten French apartment that was abandoned at the outbreak of World War II and left untouched for 70 years

Eerie new images have emerged of a French apartment abandoned at the outbreak of World War II and left untouched in the seven decades since.

Other than a thick layer of dust covering the furniture, the room looks exactly as it would have done 70 years ago when its occupants fled Paris for the south of France as the Second World War erupted in Europe.

With Germany devising the Fall Gelb – a military sub-campaign later known as the Manstein Plan, with an objective conquering Northern France – the owner of the chic apartment decided that leaving the capital was the only way she could guarantee her safety.
